I moved to Colorado from Indiana in 1978 after
falling in love with the Rocky Mountains during a brief visit. Having
always been interested in wood, I began refinishing furniture, then
making river willow pieces for the cabin by the creek in Bailey, and
then finally turning to carving wood. I worked for almost twenty years
in the emergency management industry in Colorado and “chipping away”
became an outstanding stress reliever between the inevitable severe
weather or wildfire emergency familiar to Coloradans. Being an active member of the Colorado Carvers Club has allowed me to learn carving techniques from some very skilled and interesting instructors. Each year and new experience has added to my growth. I especially like working with Cottonwood bark and Aspen found traipsing along streams and in forests in Colorado. Scandinavian lore speaks of spirits in forests – those we can generally feel, but rarely see except in the quick glimpse of a light casting a shadow. They are said to bring good luck! I love the feel of the wood and have fun trying to shape it into something else. I hope you enjoy some of the results. |
